Key Takeaways
  • Policy rates are copied from each central bank's latest official statement — not from a broker feed.
  • The next meeting date prefers the live economic calendar when a matching rate decision is scheduled.
  • A rate hold still moves FX if the statement or vote surprises; the number on this board is the starting point, not a trade.

How to read a central-bank rate board

Use the official number as the starting point, then time the next meeting on the calendar.

Short answer

A central-bank policy rate is the overnight interest rate that bank sets as its operational target. For the United States that is the federal funds target range; for the euro area traders usually quote the ECB deposit facility; for the United Kingdom it is Bank Rate; for Japan it is the overnight call-rate target. Forex prices the expected path of these rates, not only the last print.

Detailed explanation

Interest-rate differentials are a core driver of G10 FX. If the Federal Reserve holds a higher policy rate than the ECB, USD often attracts yield versus EUR — until markets price cuts. The board lists the last published official rate, the last date the rate actually changed, and the next scheduled decision. When our economic calendar has a matching high-impact rate event, that timestamp is used for the next meeting so the countdown matches the news calendar. Always open the official statement: a 0 bp hold with a hawkish vote can reprice a pair as much as a 25 bp move.

Example

Suppose the FOMC holds 3.50%–3.75% and the next meeting is in mid-September, while the ECB deposit facility is 2.25% with a decision in the same week. The USD–EUR policy gap is the spread between those official rates. A trader still checks CPI and the statement language before treating that gap as a trend. Use the economic calendar for the exact release time and the news-risk calculator if you might trade the announcement.

Common mistake

Treating a blog or social screenshot as the current Fed funds rate. The only authoritative US figure is the FOMC target range on federalreserve.gov. Broker apps can lag a statement by minutes and still show the old range. This page links each rate to the official source so you can verify before a live decision.

Professional tip

Mark the next FOMC, ECB and BoE dates together. Overlapping decision weeks are when EUR/USD and GBP/USD spreads widen. Reduce size with the news-risk calculator, or stay flat through the statement if you cannot define invalidation in advance.

Checklist before a rate decision

  • Confirm the official rate and last statement date on this board.
  • Open the matching row on the economic calendar in your local time.
  • Write the expected decision (hold, hike, cut) and what would invalidate it.
  • Widen stops or cut lot size for spread and slippage.
  • Read the official statement URL, not a headline summary, after the release.

Glossary

Policy rate
The overnight operational target a central bank uses to steer short-term money-market rates.
Target range
The FOMC sets a range (for example 3.50%–3.75%), not a single print. The effective federal funds rate usually sits inside that range.
Deposit facility rate
The ECB's key steering rate since 2024: the rate banks earn on overnight deposits at the Eurosystem.
Why this board matters in the Gulf
The Saudi riyal and UAE dirham are USD-pegged. Fed policy therefore dominates SAR and AED money-market conditions even though SAMA and the CBUAE set their own operational rates. Gulf traders watching USD/JPY or XAU/USD are still trading a Fed-led dollar. Use this board with the gold-price hub when US rates and gold move together.

Educational data only. Policy rates change at scheduled meetings and can be revised. This is not personal investment advice. Verify every figure on the official central-bank page before trading.

Central bank rates — FAQ

The FOMC sets a target range, not a single administered print. Open the Federal Reserve card on this page for the latest official range, the last statement date, and a link to federalreserve.gov. The effective federal funds rate, published by the New York Fed, usually trades inside that range.

Each card shows the next scheduled decision from the bank's published calendar. If our economic calendar has a matching high-impact rate event, we use that timestamp so the date aligns with the news calendar. Always treat dates as tentative until the bank confirms them.

Since March 2024 the ECB steers policy through the deposit facility rate. The main refinancing operations rate and the marginal lending facility sit above it. This board quotes the deposit facility because that is the rate most cited in EUR analysis.

The Saudi riyal and UAE dirham are pegged to the US dollar, so Fed policy is the dominant external rate for those money markets. That does not mean USD/SAR or USD/AED will trend like EUR/USD; the peg keeps the spot rate stable while local bills and gold in riyals still react to Fed expectations.

Each rate is taken from the bank's latest official statement or rate table: Federal Reserve FOMC statements, the ECB key-rate table, Bank of England Bank Rate, Bank of Japan money-market guidelines, the RBA cash-rate target, and the Bank of Canada overnight-rate target. Source links sit on every card.

Neither, by itself. Markets price the path of rates versus what was already expected. A hold that is more hawkish than priced can lift a currency; a hold with a dovish vote can weaken it. Use the statement, the vote, and the next-meeting guidance — not the hold label alone.
